The San Juan Islands

When Rachael's parents came to visit us we zoomed off for a weekend to the San Juan islands. They're a group of islands in the Puget Sound (the water just by Seattle) up to the North between America and Canada. In fact it seems the Brits had claimed it as their own and had an outpost there for a good long until war nearly broke out over a pig, and we decided it just wasn't worth all that trouble. Or some such. (Don't you wish you knew a little more history every now and then?).

Anyway, amongst other things we got up to while there, we went sailing to look for whales as the area is rather known for Orca whales (the one in "Free Willie" I think), and though we didn't see any whales, we did have a school of dolphins jumping infront of the boat for quite a while which was amazing. I have it on video, but we don't have any pictures - maybe its time for us to branch out and get live streaming video up here? :-) Then again, maybe not.

Enjoy the photos!

The place we stayed had loads of hummingbirds outside. If you've ever wondered why they're called that, they genuinely hum as they fly. Also they fly really fast hence the not-so-great picture!

We chartered a small (24 foot I think) sailboat (ok, and some crew too!) to take us on a search for whales in the water between the islands and Canada.

Kenneth contemplates the Genoa (a sail that stretches from the bow to beyond the mast apparently). We didn't start out on the boat looking quite this confident.

The whole crew up front. (Does rather make you wonder "Is anyone steering the ship?", doesn't it)

The happy couple gently recline upon the deck in the bright sunshine. Actually it was somewhat cooler than it looks, but hey! We saw dolphins juping right infront of the ship!

"A life on the ocean wave,
a home on the rolling seas"...
Clearly we are quite the salty bunch.

Of course, when men are together, its clear that one just can't avoid port and cigars for too long. Aha! Nature calls!

Janet stayed on with us for a few more days after Kenneth had to fly off again, galavanting around the world.

And here we are, just the three of us, back in the park in Seattle. What a great holiday! Thanks for visiting!
